It's winter, so come and dance! Traditional Newfoundland dance series starts Jan 10

Traditional Newfoundland dancing in Quidi Vidi Village

Starting Sunday January 10th from 3:30 to 5 p.m., please join us in the bar at the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company for an afternoon of traditional set dancing.   We have a great space with dance-friendly wooden floors and a wonderful view overlooking Quidi Vidi Gut.    Dances will be the 2nd and 4th weekend each month until Easter - usually on a Saturday, but the first dance is on a Sunday. We plan to have various traditional dance callers and musicians and feature dances from across Newfoundland and Labrador. We'll Run the Goat, do the Lancers, the Cotillion, the Swinging Eight, the Tucker, the Square Set, the Handkerchief Dance, and more! Come early if you don't have dance experience and we'll show you the basics starting at 3:20 p.m. and plan to get dancing as a group for 3:30.   This is an all ages, 'scent-free' event.

Dance callers on Sunday January 10th are Jane Rutherford and Ford Elms with Stan Pickett on accordion.
Cost:  $8.00 at the door ($5.00 for Seniors 60+ and young folk under 22)

When: Sunday January 10, 2010. The door opens at 3:00 p.m. and there'll be a short dance orientation for new dancers at 3:20 p.m. The first dance will start at 3:30 p.m.

Location: Quidi Vidi Brewing Company, 55 Barrows Road, Quidi Vidi Village, St. John's (parking available on site)

ALSO, Santa has asked that we think of the poor. After consulting the food bank, we decided that if everyone brings a can of cranberry sauce or tin fruit, that will brighten many Christmas dinners on the eastern Avalon.

FINALLY, a note from David and Kristy Vokey-Sing, who make all of our activities with food run so smoothly: they're looking for a few volunteers to help set up the church the night before. They'll be at St. Mark's for 7:00 pm - it only takes an hour and a half to set up. All are welcome to help. Thanks from David and Krista.

Host families needed! urgent!

Hello everyone!
As you probably know we are doing an exchange trip with Guelph Suzuki in March and May. Their group is a bit bigger than ours and we are in urgent need of a few more families to host Guelph students (ages 12-17) when they come here in May. They will be here from May 12-18.
Your responsibilities would include providing a separate sleeping space, meals and perhaps some driving. If your family is not involved in some of the activities we will do our best to co-ordinate some driving.

Of course I'm sure any STEP family has the very best hospitality!

The process for becoming a host family is easy, please just email me to indicate your interest, and fill out the first page of the attached form and forward it to me (Evelyn, see address below) as soon as possible.

We are in need of almost another 10 spaces. If we cannot provide these spaces (in short order) then the trip is at risk of being canceled.

Dec 5th STEP Group class changes

Hi everyone,
Just a note to say that all classes in the Choral room from 9-11 this Saturday will be in the fancy Petro-Canada Hall.
Also Julia's fiddle class will be joining with Dominic's class this week (also in Petro-Canada Hall) to prepare for the concert.

A reminder that our Holiday Play In will be next weekend December 12th at St. Mark's Church (Llogy Bay Rd @ Nfld Dr)
Its a 9:30 tune up for a 10am play.
We also have a pot luck so don't forget!
This is one of the best concerts of the year and so nice to have time to socialize afterwards.

SEVEC trip to Guelph for STEP students

All STEP families please read:

Parents of those students who are involved in the SEVEC/Guelph exchange are invited to attend
meetings which will occur during the planning and implementation of this exchange trip. The parents
of the larger STEP organization are invited to donate and volunteer their time to help fund raise for this
STEP activity.
To date three parent meetings(Oct. 17/09 & Oct 24/09 and Nov 21/09) have been completed. The next
meeting will be held during group lessons at 10:30 am on Nov 28/09 in the lobby area of the Donald
Cook auditorium. All parents are encouraged to attend at this time to update and seek your views and

The 9^th annual "Young Folk at The Hall"

Do you play a traditional musical instrument or sing folk songs???

Hi Folks,
Well another year has rolled around and we are getting set to produce the Young Folk at the Hall event again in 2010. As you may know, the LSPU hall is still closed for renovations so this year the Concert will take place on Sunday, January 24^th at Holy Heart Theatre at 2 pm. The Saturday afternoon workshops will be held onSaturday, January 16^th and Saturday, January 23^rd from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. at a location to be determined.

The purpose of the workshops is to give the young musicians an opportunity to share their talents with other young musicians in an informal setting; to develop musical relationships among the young musicians; and primarily, to foster the idea that playing and sharing music is an enjoyable and fulfilling activity. The content of the Sunday afternoon concert will emanate from these two workshops.

We would encourage young folk, especially those familiar with the format of the workshops, to think about bringing some new repertoire to the mix, so to speak. Perhaps choose a piece of music or a song that is not commonly performed. If you need advice about this, get in touch with me.

Once again several of our seasoned members will facilitate these workshops sessions. The workshops will give the young musicians and singers an opportunity to talk to and play with these musicians, learn more about their instrument of choice (voice included) and explore the possibility of musical liaisons with their peers and have FUN!!!!!.

The workshops will be free of charge, sponsored by the Folk Arts Society, and any proceeds from the concert will help produce the Neil Murray Stage at the annual Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Festival in August. If you are interested please reply/register by filling out the details below and mail (or email) it to the return address as soon as possible. If you know of any interested young musical friends please ask them to get in touch with me. Unfortunately space is limited so please register early.

STEP's Annual General Meeting will take place Saturday night, October 17, at 7:00 pm in the E.B.Foran Room at City Hall. It's a potluck and your children are welcome. (Any family with a surname A-M please bring a main course, and families with surnames N-Z, please bring a dessert.) Children are invited to bring their instruments for an informal play-in.

We're hoping for a large attendance. This is an important event in our calendar as it's one of the few times we will all get together to socialize all season. You'll have an opportunity to vote for the new STEP board, and hear highlights of the coming season from our Artistic Director, Evelyn Osborne. Your input and concerns will also be heard at this meeting.

Hello STEP families (last message for now!),

We're all getting together at the E.B.Foran room in City Hall on Saturday night, October 17, 7-10 pm. It's a chance to socialize and meet STEP's teachers and the Board of Directors in an informal setting.

If your surname begins with the letters A-K, please bring a main course, salad, bread or suitable accompaniment. Families L-Z may bring dessert. Children are welcome.

We're looking for a new Chair. If you'd like the job, or would like to serve on the board in another capacity, please contact our returning officer: Ann Martin annmartin@nf.sympatico.ca before the AGM.

Duties of the Chair:

Organizes and chairs monthly meetings of the board

Drafts an agenda for these meetings in consultation with board members and STEP's artistic director

Keeps an eye on the program's well-being, delegating responsibilities for the smooth running of the program

Signs cheques!

We hope to see everyone there!

Due to Julia Bowdring's very exciting trip to NYC this weekend, the Walter McIsaac class will be meeting with the Val Ryan class at the same time in room 2025. Have fun fiddling around!

Musicianship 1, 3 and 4 class changes

It turns out that we have a great problem! A number of the people we expected to be in Musicianship 3 are great sight readers and need to be in Musicianship 4 which unfortunately conflicts with their Rufus Guinchard fiddle class. Therefore, it looks as though we'll have to change Musicianship 4 to 9:30. While we find another teacher and get them up to speed we will be combining Musicianship 3 and 4 this week only! Please go to the choral room for this large class.

Musicianship 1 students please now go to room 2017 at the same time 9:30.

Musicianship 2 is unchanged and will be in room 2025 with Rachel Landy.

Become a fiddler with STEP!

Three good reasons to join the fiddle classes this year!

1) Fiddle is easy, motivational and fun! It's a practical way to put your violin skills to good use!

2) Lots more opportunities to perform - *everyone* loves to hear the tunes!

3) You will be helping to preserve Newfoundland culture

4) You can join the STEP Fiddlers performing group after a year and get to perform on cruise ships, at the Folk Festival, and lots of other cool and exciting places!

So come join the fiddle classes! It's not too late. If you can play Minuet Three you can join the beginner fiddle class! You get a CD and the music so you can learn the tunes just the same way as you learn your Suzuki repertoire. (Except the tunes are easier!!)

Basic Musicianship curriculum

Hello parents,

Confused about which musicianship class your child should attend? The best thing to do is to speak to your teacher this week, however I am including a basic curriculum below to help you determine where their music reading skills lie. Cellists have their very own class and can disregard below. Please note this class is only required for those between Minuet 2 in Book 1 and the start of Book 6.

These classes are meant to introduce music reading and basic theory to our students. Music reading is a skill developed over many years. However, this is not meant to replace or undermine learning repertoire by ear but to supplement and prepare our students for opportunities in orchestras and chamber music groups. A good balance of ear and music reading is essential for any great musician!

A very quick guideline is

Musicianship 1
    - beginner music readers and those who need to work on A and E string reading and basic rhythm

Musicianship 2
    - those who have some proficiency on A and E strings but need to D and G strings

Musicianship 3
    - those who can read all notes on all strings and basic rhythms but need to work on basic sightreading with both pitch and rhythm together

Musicianship 4
    - for those violinists in book 5 or whom can already sight read very well. Alto clef may also be introduced here.

Below is a more detailed outline of what we hope each class will learn.

Hello to all potential violists out there!

The viola is a beautiful instrument which is vitally important to a balanced string program. We would love to have a viola class for everyone who is interested!

It is encouraged that any violinist wishing to join the Young Virtuosi in the next few years have some experience in viola and reading alto clef. This group traveled to London, England last year and will likely be traveling to Guelph, Ontario this year along with a few of our other students.

Parent group class members needed

Hi Parents!

Ever wanted to play along with your child but just don't have time to keep up with them. Do you have an instrument languishing in the corner that you meant to learn? We offer a parent group class which can help you learn violin for your own enjoyment and be that much better at helping your child practice! You can be the center of attention at gatherings of family and friends as you and your family provide beautiful music to everyone's delight!
Currently we only have one parent registered and we need a few more to run this class. If you ever wanted more instruction this is your chance!

The class had been scheduled at 11:30 in room 2025 but has since been taken off the form. If we receive a few more registrations this weekend we can restart the class for October 3rd. The fee for this class is $200 for the year. If you are interested please email me at suzukinlAD@gmail.com

Looking forward to seeing lots of parents who enjoy playing violin and cello as much as their children do!
