Getting Started: A Quick Guide for New Families
So you want to join STEP—welcome! We're glad you're here! This is what you need to know:
-
STEP offers group classes for children ages 0 to 18—there's no right or wrong time to join!

-
Our weekly classes take place on Saturday mornings (9am-12pm) at the MUN School of Music.

-
What sets STEP apart from other music programs is the Suzuki Method, an internationally recognized teaching philosophy developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki.

-
Our Early Childhood Education Classes are for children 0-3.5 years. They're fun and educational, and are a fantastic musical foundation for children before they begin formal lessons on their instrument!

-
Students can begin learning violin, viola, or cello, as early as 3 years old! The Core Suzuki Curriculum consists of an Instrumental Group Class with your student's peer group, and a Music & Movement or Musicianship class.

-
In the Suzuki Method, Group Classes are an important supplement to a weekly private lesson with one of our Suzuki-trained teachers. Fees and scheduling for private lessons are arranged directly with the teacher (separate from STEP class fees).

-
STEP offers Enrichment Classes to supplement the Core Curriculum, including Fiddle classes (for all playing levels, and for cello!) and Reading Orchestra (for students who have completed the Musicianship curriculum). Our optional 6-week Spring Term has different offerings each year with classes like Improv, Intro to Fiddle, STEP Fiddlers, Sightreading, Choir, Intro to Piano, and more!
-
Enrichment Classes are open to non-Suzuki students at the discretion of the Artistic Director.
-

-
Our Performing Groups are the STEP Fiddlers, who perform in the Spring and Summer, and Young Virtuosi, for advanced students.
-
Performing Groups are open to non-Suzuki students at the discretion of the Artistic Director.
-

-
The Newfoundland and Labrador Suzuki Institute (NLSI) is a week-long Summer camp for all students to dig in and have some intensive musical fun with Master Suzuki teachers visiting from out-of-province, as well as the familiar faces from STEP who we know and love!
-
NLSI is open to new students and non-Suzuki students.
